Reflection of Learning
Standard 1: Visionary Leadership
Standard one was displayed when I designed a flipped professional development for my district. As a member of my building leadership team at South Central Local Schools, I discussed the possibility of designing a professional development to engage staff to support more student learning. Our school’s previous professional developments were very passive by nature with a lot of direct instruction. The flipped professional development gave a new spark to professional development in our district. After my successful design of the flipped professional development, our instructional coach changed future professional developments to incorporate more of the flipped design. This transformation has had a huge impact on our district’s professional growth. I would have never thought to try this practice without the guidance of my classes at Bowling Green State University.
Standard 2: Teaching, Learning, and Assessments
Standard two will always be an evolving standard in my teaching career. I have effectively demonstrated my ability to help teachers in my district by becoming a technology integration coach through a grant that was funded back in 2010-2012. This allowed me to learn the needs of teachers while building relationships with them to improve their integration techniques to meet students’ needs.
Beyond improving teachers use of technology at South Central Local Schools, I have reached other teachers through blogging online. My coaching blog,http://www.coachbedingfield.com/tech-blog, has allowed me to provide teachers with monthly integration tips in video format along with text explaining the integration techniques. The blog has provided me with a unique opportunity to share with more teaching professionals across the globe.
I will continue to grow my blog after my completion of my masters degree in educational technology from Bowling Green State University. My hope is to do some podcasting or videocasting that allows me to have more one on one conversations with teachers from around the world. The goal should be to never reach a certain destination, but rather to continue to grow as education evolves.
Standard 3: Digital Age Learning Environments
Digital age learning environments has been one of my strengths since becoming an educator in 2005. Before working with Google Apps for education, I had my students use wikis to collaborate on documents and post to the web. My first digital age learning environment took place, sc247.wikispaces.com, where students would share work, collaborate on project designs and even view missed homework posted from each class. Teachers in my district took notice of this online learning environment, and my technology coordinator even allowed me to put it on our school website. Within a few years, our middle school wiki became the most clicked page according to our statistics from our website provider. Our district leaders took notice of the impact it was having on student learning and allowed me to present it to our staff at a professional development. As soon as staff members took in the information about designing a wiki, they wanted to explore possible uses for ways to integrate it. This thirst for technology integration in our district led to me becoming a technology integration coach.
While becoming our technology integration coach at South Central schools, my passion for digital age learning environments grew. It has led me to creating more online environments to help teachers grow professionally. With the help of my Bowling Green classes and previous wikis I have created more online environments such as, http://itech4u.wikispaces.com/ , joebedingfield.weebly.com and http://www.coachbedingfield.com/trojan-trouble-shooting.html . The troubleshooting page, http://www.coachbedingfield.com/trojan-trouble-shooting.html, has been a huge help throughout my district. Teachers have bookmarked the page as a guide before emailing or picking up the phone to ask for help.
My learning environment increases daily with a shared Google drive folder within the district for teachers to add in technology integration tips to. Teachers will randomly add a technology integration tip to the folder by screencasting how they will use the tool. Teachers learned how to screencast and add to a Google Drive folder at our flipped professional development as previously stated. This allows for a true digital age learning environment to take place through collaboration. My hopes are to continue this practice with more videos and ideas to be added for the future.
Standard 4: Professional Development and Program Evaluation
In order to develop the online environments created throughout this program, I created a needs survey which helped me indicate technology needs in my district. I have always felt that in order to get people to the level you want to achieve, you must first meet them at their level. The needs assessment conducted for the professional development helped me determine a starting point for improving technology integration at my school district. Besides creating a needs survey, it is important to be available for teachers who need some guidance. A great way to help teachers effectively is to create shareable screencast using Screencastify. This Google Addon allows teachers to create a screencast and share it just like a google document. Having plenty of time constraints as a busy teaching professional, I don’t have the time to help each teacher in person. In order to assist teacher’s with their technology integration needs, I usually create a screencast to share with them which usually takes care of their request. I have learned the value of using technology as a problem solver by taking courses at Bowling Green State University.
Standard 5: Digital Citizenship
Digital citizenship is a standard I model on a daily basis and will continue to do after my completion of the program. I try to use twitter to showcase student successes and classroom learning, and treat all media as if it is going to be published in the newspaper. This allows me to serve as a good role model for students by showcasing exemplary digital citizenship. In addition to posting to Twitter, I post and update our class website daily with happenings within our classroom. It is important for students to see the great benefits to being a responsible digital citizen.
Standard 6: Content Knowledge and Professional Growth
Over the past two years at Bowling Green State University, I have learned so much about how to integrate technology to support student learning. In addition to completing my Master’s degree, I have obtained my K-12 Computer Technology Endorsement which has opened up more job possibilities. Currently, I’m exploring virtual reality units using Cospaces.io in my 8th grade technology class. I believe the next step would be to incorporate this field of virtual reality into more core classrooms allowing visual learning to take place with the help of technology. Furthermore, I would like to create a makerspace at my school building that will allow students to explore more possibilities. I’m also in the process of using Tinkercad by Autodesk to allow students to 3D print their self created Washington D.C. projects. I believe my growth will be more like the growth I see in future classrooms. Hands on learning will be the continued direction of technology, education and my learning in the future. The NETS-C Standards have outlined a great plan for all educators to impact the future of learning.
